Your Social Media Activities Are Here Today, Not Gone Tomorrow

It's not just Big Brother who's watching

by SoftwareGuru

Learning the latest software tips and tricks is all well and good but sometimes it pays to take a closer at how we behave online.

In particular, our online social behaviour could pose problems when it comes to employment.

You can take it as a given that most employers will now check to see your social media networking profiles along with any other information they can find about you online.

This is why here at Software4Students we are continuously focused on the issue of privacy. It can effect so many different aspects of our lives that it may only be when something goes wrong that we start to appreciate it.

The current internet generation may have developed in an oversharing, expose-your-daily-life-completely style but in the long term it may be an evolution some will soon regret.

The scale of the problem is evident in that SiliconRepublic.com are reporting that Irish Employers urged to ban Twitter and Facebook due to the amount of time being wasted during working hours.

Online due diligence

Social media screening is becoming an important part of the recruitment process.

If employers find content on social networking sites that they do not approve of then it will most likely cause them not to hire that candidate.

Not only that but in some industries such as PR and Marketing you could also be judged on your contacts in your friends list!

In terms of advice, there are a few obvious but valuable lessons to learn.

Criticising your current or previous job, work colleagues or even boss is not going to do endear other employers to you. If you've made personal photos and information public, these too could possibly have a negative impact.

When it comes to your online presence, it's worth remembering that repeated phrase we've heard from television cop shows... "anything you say can and will be taken down and used in evidence against you".

Without becoming overly paranoid, it is definitely worth taking a second to think the next time you're about to post a picture or blog post online. Think about who may read it and what consequences it may have.

Benefits and Disadvantages

There are many benefits and opportunities that may present themselves to those using online social networking.

The wealth and depth of knowledge available via the internet is staggering and whether we like it or not, this is only likely to increase in the future.

From school sports achievements to debate society cups, the education path of future generations will be a lot more visible to outsiders than previously imagined.

How far things will go remains to be seen. Will employers try to access your medical records if you are a candidate for a top position? How far will a company go to recruit the right employee?

As always, sharing experiences and memories online with friends can be fun but keep in mind that someday, a potential employer may ask you about one of them!
