Will Ireland's New Government Protect Local Libraries?

Local Education and Learning Resources Must Be Protected

by SoftwareGuru

Libraries are one of Ireland's most undervalued resources.

I remember as a child, the joy of going into my local library and browsing all the enchanting titles on the shelves.

Novels to take you away to far away lands and to slay dragons or sail into outer space to meet skinny aliens.

However, libraries are much more than fiction and stories and dusty old books.

Libraries are a wonderful way of accessing free information.

They are particularly valuable to low-income families and to students who wish to use their services.

Nowadays, your local library will have internet access, which is usually fast broadband, and even printing services that are much cheaper than internet cafes.

You'll usually need to book a time to access the computers in the library, and the staff will help you out as best they can.

Community Spirit

With the economic climate in the state it's in at the moment, the opportunity of getting something for free has never been more important.

And at times like this, local community spirit becomes vital, with everyone working together for a greater good.

The library is an essential part of the local community, and will serve to educate and enrich the surrounding area.

Just look at impoverished towns in third world countries, who have watched TED.com videos online to learn how to grow crops better and to develop their skills.

Towns and villages in Ireland could learn a lot from these people and make our own lives better too through education.

The books there are also of great use.

There's many fantastic non-fiction books which you can use to research essays and assignments, and if ever you have to do a project on the local area, they're an invaluable resource for finding out about notable figures who lived nearby and important events that took place in the past.

If what you're looking for isn't easily available, then you can enquire with one of the staff members, and they may be able to order in whatever book you need.

New Government, New Danger?

The 2011 General Election in Ireland gave voters the opportunity to express their anger at the previous Government via the ballot box.

For all the talk of Western democracy, documentaries such as Sony's "Inside Job" (which just won the Oscar for best documentary) are showing that in a country like America, Government decisions are usually made with the interests of the richest 1% in mind.

In Ireland, property developers clearly had far too much access and influence over the last Government.

We must become much more vocal about the issues which impact directly on our local communities.

SiliconRepublic.com featured several interesting articles last week as part of Digital Schools Week.

In one, they highlighted how the VLE Ireland solution created by Software Asset Management Ireland is being used in primary schools.

Entitled "Reimagining Irish education" the article explains why we must continue to invest in digital technology and e-learning for schools.

It will cost us as a nation much more in the long term if we do not invest today.
