Will CAO applications rise due to recession?
Stiff Competition For Places.
by SoftwareGuru Thursday 19th February 2009
If CAO applications in Ireland for the academic year 2009/2010 follow a similar trend to the UK's UCAS system, we could see a significant rise on previous years.
The question remains, what effect will the recession have on third level places and opportunities this year?
Perhaps secondary school pupils now realise that in the current economic climate, there is even less chance of getting a job directly after secondary school and are therefore seeking relevant degrees to boost their career prospects.
Alternatively, it could be argued that more so than ever before, secondary school pupils see University life as a convenient three to four year delay in having to get a job and start their career proper.
It may be a little of both. Either way, competition for places could be even tougher this year than usual.

Escaping The Recession.
For parents advising their children as to their possible future careers, more consideration may have been given this time around to jobs in the public sector.
This is not surprising given the cost of a three year degree and UK trends may well be repeated in Ireland.
In the UK applications for nursing rose by 16.7%, education degrees by 10.7% and teacher training by 3.7%.
It is believed that people are opting for "safer" jobs outside business and commerce.
Could this mean that Irish students who fail to achieve their projected grades this year are less likely to find a place elsewhere?
Considering the emotion and drama that surrounds the exam result season, along with the scramble for university and college places, prospective students must carefully consider whether the true cost of their degree is also worth the financial burden.

Begin Planning Now.
For students hoping to go to college or university this year, the exam season will seem like a lifetime away.
The reality is that the next four months will fly by and the results will play a large role in the opportunities available for each student.
Making use of as many resources as possible can help students along the way. Thanks to Microsoft and Software4Students, you can even get hold of the latest educational and office software for home use at extremely low prices.
So whether it's something simple like making use of Vista's Windows Calendar (I'd struggle to stay organised now without it) or using OneNote and Word 2007 to prepare exam revision ready notes - every little advantage helps.
Laying strong foundations now will give students a quiet self-confidence come exam time. As the motto goes, 'Be Prepared.'
