To Buy Or Not To Buy A New PC, That Is The Question

Before the Christmas shopping spending marathon begins, outline your goals.

by SoftwareGuru

Around this time of year we often start thinking about getting a better computer. This presents us with a few basic questions.

New or upgrade?
PC or Mac?
Desktop or laptop?

The amount of money you have available is likely to determine the outcome.

Previously we have blogged about how students can upgrade their existing computer on a small budget.

As Christmas approaches, ads will try to convince us that not only do we need that product but that it somehow reflects our personality.

I wonder what Tyler Durden would have to say about that?

I don't know why some people invest emotionally in their computer as opposed to say their washing machine which arguably plays a bigger role in the first impression you give to people.

Perhaps washing machine manufacturers don't benefit from having the same marketing buzz as a product like the iPod.

If you are able to put your own brand bias aside, it will help you get the most value for your money when it comes to finding a great computer deal.

The Right Setup For You

In the same way that you don't need to buy a 4WD vehicle if it's only ever used to pop down to the shops, computers should likewise be tailored to your needs.

Intel processors with onboard graphics will allow you to surf the web, edit documents and do all of the regular tasks without the need for a decicated graphics card (GPU).

If you are a gamer, not only do you need a decent GPU but Windows 7 64-bit software is a must to enable over 3GB of RAM in your system.

Nvidia this week announced it's new top of the range GTX 580 graphics card.

If it's value you're after the GTX 460 1GB model provides excellent bang for your buck, or pound even, at under €200 depending on the brand model.

Upgrading your PC and installing Windows 7 will give you a clear performance boost.

New computers usually come with trial software. It's best to uninstall trials and buy the software you are likely to use daily such as Microsoft Office 2010.

If you are getting a Mac desktop or laptop this Christmas, Office for Mac 2011 will help you keep your ideas organised as well as allow documents to be transferred from from Mac to PC.

Whether you are thinking of getting a Mac or PC it's important to take data security seriously.

Kaspersky 2011 AntiVirus software can protect your computer from net nasties and is a worthwhile investment.
Buying Online

Bargain hunting online is likely to bring you more success than high street shopping in Ireland.

If you compare any hardware from say, Peats with Amazon, it's likely that Amazon will be cheaper.

Likewise, if you compare popular software prices from Amazon with this website you'll usually find that Software4Students is cheaper.

With software companies' own websites featuring video help guides and PDF manuals, there's not much sense in paying a lot more for a boxed high street version of the same program.

Other online retailers may sell 'student' versions of software but as an Official Microsoft Ireland partner, we sell full versions at academic prices.

Every week, customers share their positive shopping experiences on our Facebook page and over 5,000 fans can't be wrong!

Before your friends start their Christmas shopping this year, perhaps you could tell them about Software4Students via Facebook and Twitter.

Your friends and family will thank you when they realise how much money they've saved!

Whether you decide to buy a new computer or upgrade this Christmas, visit Software4Students Ireland for the cheapest software prices.

We look forward to hearing from you online and help us spread the word about these brilliant savings.
