Time For Microsoft Office For Mac 2011 To Grow Up?
Maturity Prevails
by
SoftwareGuru
Macworld.com have been writing about the new edition of
Office for Mac which has just been released to
manufacturing.
Office Mac students have been waiting patiently for news ever
since the arrival of
Microsoft Office 2010 for PC.
Every previous incarnation of Office on the Mac has taken two
steps forwards and one step back. Progress has been steady but
never revolutionary.
It's interesting to see how the quotes chosen by Macworld shape
the tone of the piece.
Microsoft's Han-Yi Shaw likened Office 2008 to a teenager -
“a little quirky” - but said the new edition is Office matured.
“This is the version that everyone wanted,” he said.
So is this the marketing angle that Microsoft are going to
pursue or is it simply a statement of fact, that having been
through several incarnations Office for Mac is finally about to
reach maturity.
Apple may have had incredible success with hardware in recent
years but the whole point of it is to experience and create
content for which you need software.
Apple products feed off consumer buzz and while music software
such as iTunes and Ping may grab attention, the same cannot be
said of office productivity and the management of documents.

Lack of understanding
Whenever people fail to understand something
it can create fear and the easiest way to cover this up is to
criticise or even lash out at the source.
That's not to say that a poorly implemented idea should be
exempt from criticism.
The point in relation to Microsoft Office is that features such
as the Ribbon are usually subject to knee-jerk responses from
people.
In this
Office video clip, Doug Thomas confirms that Microsoft is
aware of user feedback and explains why the ribbon was
introduced as well as the benefits it has to offer.
The Office Ribbon in Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 will be an
even more refined version of its Windows counterpart.
Mac users will welcome the news that no menu bars have been
replaced except for the maligned 'Elements Gallery' which some
Mac users criticised due to its inflexibility.
Macworld reports, "This new Ribbon is designed to give users
quick access to each program's most commonly used tools."
The fact remains that any new software is going to have some new
and improved features which may take a little bit of time to
master.
Office software for mac like any Microsoft Office software is
designed with daily use in mind.
In the same way that it's very difficult to remember a password
to login to a website you don't visit often, it can be equally
tricky to remember how everything works in Office if you only
use it occasionally.
Ease-of-use is an important factor but a balance has to be made
between keeping the user interface simple and still providing
the wealth of options that more experienced users expect and
demand.
