Software4Students' Student Twitter Influence: Ranked Top #200 In The World
Is Twitter More Similar To Television Than We Realise?
by
SoftwareGuru
When Facebook launched it was similar enough to earlier social
media sites like MySpace that people understood what it was.
You could set up a profile, interact with friends online and
even declare that you liked a movie, product or company profile.
Twitter was different. It still remains slightly confusing to
many people who have yet to try it.
On Facebook, Software4Students has over 6,300+ fans and is
clearly very popular.
Any time I am asked to explain Twitter, I give the same
example.
If you turned on your TV and there was nothing on to watch, you
wouldn't decide that all television is rubbish and give your TV
set away.
Your TV viewing experience depends on knowing what channels to
watch and when there's likely to be something good coming on.
Twitter offers channels, described as user streams, on every
subject and topic imaginable.
If you don't like the information you're receiving, change the
channel.
For bargain hunters looking out for the latest money saving
deals and special offers, Twitter can be a fantastic resource.

So how do we find out what's on?
A great place to start is WeFollow.com which lists the top
categories on Twitter by interest and also geographically.
For example, a search for users tagged with the word 'student'
reveals that our Twitter account @studentsoftware is currently
ranked #193 in the world.
That's #193 in terms of Twitter influence for the word
'student'.
A search for 'music' would lead you towards this page of
Twitter users tagged under music.
So you see, Twitter can provide as many useful channels as you
could ever want!
From fashion to gardening tips and beyond, there's something for
everyone.
The very nature of instant communication and real-time search
enables Twitter to stay ahead of the mainstream news media and
newspapers.
This was particularly evident in the last week with the
issue of sexism being in the news.
In 2011, it's important that schools and teachers can give both
male and female students alike the confidence to embrace
technology and IT.
KickItOut.org who do wonderful work with their 'Let's
Kick Rascism Out Of Football' have since
launched a YouTube video on the Sexism in Football issue.

Twitter Resources
It's great to see a
stronger female presence in tech-related matters as highlighted
by
@girlgeeks.
The Software4Students Twitter account has a few handy lists
available if you're interested in finding people within the
education and IT industry to follow:

on Twitter
On Twitter you will always have plenty of choice.
If you don't care much for a particular user, it's easy to
"unfollow" them.
Unlike Facebook, it's much more common to follow people you
don't know in real life so you don't need to worry about
offending someone by later unfollowing them.
That brings us nicely to the issue of social media etiquette and
the fact that some older parents may be struggling to understand
what any of this really means.
Our article archive features many topics which you may
find useful:
-
Step By Step Guide For Parents Using Twitter
-
Cyberbullying advice for parents
-
Student life, love and social media
At Software4Students Ireland we always give you more.
That's why we've just launched a new deal where Office 2010
customers will get
8 additional Free Learning Suite applications.
