Parents: Separate Your Facebook Followers For Professional Networking

An alternative to LinkedIn.

by SoftwareGuru

The high number of parents visiting the Software4Students website is yet another example of how mainstream the internet has become.

Social media may have started out originally as a way for college students to form online groups but it has evolved far beyond that.

It's safe to say that many parents now have social media profiles.

The question is, do you really want to put your family, close friends, not-so-close-friends, and work associates all together in the same group?

Probably not.

While the business networking site LinkedIn is regularly used, it lacks the media hype of Facebook.

The majority of people will always use what they are most familiar with and therefore, many will not have made a conscious separation between personal friend groups and those from our professional lives.

Parents and Business Networking

The key advantage to dividing between personal and professional friendships is being able to exert greater control over information.

Here's how you do it.

1. In Facebook, click on the 'Friends' tab located near the top of the page.

2. When you see the “Create a New List” button, click it and create your new list “Professional”.

3. Browse your list of friends and think about who should be added to your new list of professional contacts.

4. When the list is complete, you'll need to edit your privacy settings. In the top right corner of Facebook you'll find the 'Settings' link. Navigate from there to 'Privacy' then 'Profile'.

The profile privacy settings page allows you to control what aspects of your profile can be viewed by others, specifically the groups you have created.

For example, wall posts and personal photos can be made inaccessible to your new professional contacts group.

Restricting access is one way to allow someone to follow your profile without giving them full access to your information and activities.

Group Mentality

Back in 1998, Yahoo! Groups launched and was a new way for people with similar interests to meet up online.

Social media has now completely overtaken all of these old style groups due to the ease with which users can interact with each other on the likes of Facebook.

It is now possible to grow your professional network by using Facebook groups, of which there are many!

However, a word of caution: those who approach social media networking with a "how can I manipulate others to my benefit?" attitude will quickly experience the online equivalent of the cold shoulder.

People are only interested in what you have to say if it is genuinely interesting and doesn't sound like a sales pitch. Neither should that mean you post an endless stream of updates which are nothing more than links to articles.

The phrase "treat others how you would like them to treat you" is particularly fitting in this case.
