Opening Microsoft Office 2007 documents in Microsoft Office 2003 and older

Microsoft Office 2007 software makes Office 2003 look like very out-dated software. Not only does it utilise the "ribbon" user interface, the newest version of Office uses a new file format.

This can lead to confusion for existing Office 2003 users. Friends, family, and colleagues may complain that they can’t open Office 2007 documents they have received from you or other people using the latest version of Office.

Microsoft Office Software Problem Solving

There are a couple of ways to tackle this problem.

  1. If you’re using Office 2007, you can save your documents as previous versions, and you can even set Office tosave files in the 97-2003 file format by default.
  2. If you don’t have Office 2007 (a), you can purchase it if you're either a student or a family member. Check out our Office Product Page for the best deals!
  3. If you don’t have Office 2007 (b), download the Office Compatibility Pack. It allows you to open, edit and save documents, workbooks, and presentations in the file formats new to Microsoft Office Word 2007, Excel 2007, and PowerPoint 2007. The Compatibility Pack can also be used with Microsoft Office Word Viewer 2003, Excel Viewer 2003, and PowerPoint Viewer 2003 to view files saved in these new formats.

Microsoft Office Software Compatibility Pack

Downloading the Office Compatibility Pack is very simple, and installation is painless and carefree.

When sending a document to an older Office user, make sure to save in a file format their Office can open!

If you are using other programs together with Excel or Word files, it may be a good idea to save in the 97-2003 file format, as some older third party software is not yet up to speed with these new formats!

As long as you remember to click "Save As", you'll be fine!

No need to worry about compatibility issues, just use the "Save As..." command and you can save in any number of filetypes. Why would anyone ever go back to Office 2003?
