TV continues to evolve in Ireland.

We've blogged previously on Software4Students about the impending role of IPTV in our lives. We all watch TV to some extent and there can be no doubt that the internet and Vista's Windows Media Centre has opened up new exciting possibilities for everyone.
In Dublin, new cable provider Magnet have successfully launched it's own IPTV offering supplying 12,000 homes and is growing at 40% per year.
Now Sky are launching it's own online TV subscription model so even Santa can catch up on the latest sports events and matches while on the job.
Previously, Sky subscribers could access their current subscription via one PC or laptop. This new deal with mean no satellite dish is needed at all!

Online TV Options.
Vista's Windows Media Centre already provides Vista users with wide ranging multimedia options including watching TV through your PC or even recording it to watch later.
It's possible to use Vista to record say, The Late Late Toy Show on your PC and then stream it to your Xbox so the children can watch it in another room.
PC users who wish to take up the new Sky offer can avail of basic packages for a subscription of €18 per month.
For all the sports channels this fee rises to €50. There is also on-demand, pay-per-download programming available.
The live streaming channels come in a few grades of quality to suit all broadband connection speeds, so you can tailor it to suit your needs.

Powered by Microsoft Silverlight.
It's interesting to note that the new Sky TV online player uses Microsoft Silverlight - a new alternative to Adobe Flash.
The player is compatible with both Macs and PCs.
Anyone who has purchased Expression Studio 2 will have already had access to developing Microsoft Silverlight videos and applications.
The first place I've encountered Silverlight's innovative nature is over at Xbox360 game site banjo-kazooie.com which uses Silverlight as part of it's introduction sequence.
Of course, RTE is still lagging behind and has yet to roll out digital TV successfully across the country. Until then internet users are finding other ways to watch their favourite shows as soon as they are aired.
