Microsoft Prepare For IPTV Mainstream Acceptance
The Future of Television: Microsoft IPTV
The line between television and the internet continues to blur with the arrival of mainstream IPTV.
As a user of both IPTV (for telly) and VoIP (for phone) through the media company Magnet, I was intrigued to learn more recently of Microsoft's IPTV plans.
Ever since Windows Media Centre emerged, it's been clear that this is something Microsoft sees on the horizon and wants to be well placed for it when it finally hits mass consciousness.
Currently, I can stream my favourite shows from my PC to my Xbox 360 and watch them on the living room TV. IPTV will enhance this experience even further...

Connecting The Dots
The advantages of connecting your data (eg. TV shows) to all your devices becomes even clearer and easier with IPTV.
Download your favourite shows from the internet, watch them in your living room on your TV and re-watch that season finale on your mobile while going to work - even adjust your TV recording remotely from your mobile or laptop.

The Digital Lifestyle
Music, Movies, Television Programmes: anything capable of being rendered in zeros and ones is now mere content for digital devices. Just as CDs and walkmans have become passé in the age of iPods and downloading, how we watch TV is going to change too.
Traditionally, U.S. TV shows have always been aired much later in Europe. Now any fan outside of the U.S. can download them the next day after they've aired.
As with the Search Wars, whoever controls the "portal" controls the advertising. IPTV will give you greater choice and greater freedom. It will also give the advertisers the opportunity to market goods and services to you that, potentially, are tailored with your overall viewing habits and even your websurfing habits in mind.
Whether you think that is a good thing or not is up to you!
