Microsoft Ireland Data Centre Highlights Software-As-Service Future
The Gloves Are Off.
by

In keeping with the previous theme of
Ireland's role within the global knowledge economy, let's take a
look at the new Microsoft data centre.
At a cost of $500 million dollars, that's no small investment
and thanks to the Irish climate other companies may consider
establishing their own data centres here also.
Between the various noises that the government is making, the
Irish media's acknowledgement of the importance of our digital
strategy, and the overall sense of urgency - it's clear that the
penny has dropped.
For the last six months it's been frustrating to watch the Irish
economy stumble along while the various industry leaders and
politicians scratched their heads and debated what needed to be
done.
Finally, action is starting to take the place of rhetoric. The
gloves are off and Ireland can start punching above its weight
again.

On The Radar.
The
attempted resurrection of Ireland's economy hasn't gone
unnoticed.
The Scotsman newspaper on 27.09.09 ran a story describing how
Ireland has been considering a 5 year tax break for any digital
content companies that move to Ireland.
Dundee's Realtime Worlds Games Studio is one of the targeted
companies (they enjoyed success with Crackdown on
Xbox360 games console) and the newspaper asks what the Scottish
government are doing to prevent this from happening.
Considering the lack of respect the Scottish media have towards
Dundee's games industry (arguably because it's not based in
Glasgow or Edinburgh), it wouldn't be entirely surprising if a
wholesale move to Ireland was on the cards.
At the very least, the games industry in Scotland should ask the
Scottish government to match whatever Ireland is offering.
The games industry is one of the few areas to come through the
recession relatively unscathed. Ireland therefore needs to
follow in Scotland's footsteps and support those who have the
vision and expertise to establish successful games and digital
content companies.

Addressing The Skills Shortage.
There are some things that cannot be taught in a classroom. In
terms of digital business strategy there is no substitute for
experience.
Ireland's lack of experienced digital marketing expertise needs
to be addressed.
One news report at
SiliconRepublic states that "The Digital Marketing
Institute and recruitment agency Prosperity are jointly
investing €2.3m to upskill and place more than 700 marketing
executives in the digital sector in Ireland over the next two
years" - which is encouraging.
Personally, you can't be successful at marketing online unless
you can fully put yourself into the shoes of your customers.
Irish online businesses must deliver an experience which is as
friendly and easy to use as possible.
