Irish Teachers Face Toughest Back To School Season Yet
One Cut Too Many?
by SoftwareGuru
Teachers in Ireland are coming to terms
with the highly publicised education cuts enforced upon them due
to the banking crisis and current recession.
In what is being described as the bleakest 'back to school'
season for decades, the main areas of concern are as follows:
- Fewer Teachers and Less Subject Choice
- Shortages of Senior Staff
- Bigger Classes
- School Trips Scrapped
- Language Support and Special Needs Slashed
- Question Mark Over Transition Year and Leaving Cert Applied
In itself this is but one small aspect of a much larger problem.
A lot of parents across Ireland outside of the education system
are facing problems of their own whether it's reduced salary or
unemployment.
Right now, the teachers of Ireland must do the best they can
with the limited resources at their disposal. No change there
some might say.
Unfortunately, some aspects of learning development will suffer
more than others. How can Ireland move forward in the digital
age when schools are to cut back on investing in computer
technology?
It is a huge obstacle to overcome.

Education Beyond The Classroom.
It is vital that communities in Ireland pull together to give
schools the help and assistance they need to give the next
generation the best chance possible of a full and worthwhile
education.
Parents cannot expect teachers to do everything. As discussed
here previously, search engines may provide facts and links to
knowledge but it is up to parents in Ireland to provide wisdom.
With class sizes increasing and the ability of schools to retain
quality teachers decreasing, parents should become proactive in
relation to their children's education.
While computer technology in schools may be under threat due to
budget constraints, the cost of home PCs and laptops has never
been cheaper and software has never been so affordable.
Students can also find their local library to be a place where
they can study in peace and use computers to learn more about
the online world.
Generations before us have come through arguably much harsher
times and achieved success and prosperity so we must strive to
emulate their determination and hunger to better ourselves.

Self-taught
Pupils in Ireland must also be aware that their future is in
their own hands.
Parents and teachers are there to guide students but ultimately,
life choices are their own to make.
Education cuts won't make things easier but Ireland is still a
land of great opportunity to those who are not afraid to work
hard and by doing so, put themselves in luck's way.
At Software4Students, we started out by helping disadvantaged
schools. Now we are an Official Microsoft Education Reseller,
providing affordable software to pupils, parents and guardians
all over the country.
The internet offers a wealth of information and resources. It
provides the current crop of Irish pupils with an edge that
simply did not exist for previous generations.
From chemistry experiments to new music composition, video
tutorials exist now on the likes of YouTube that cover every
topic imaginable.
Therefore pupils should try to become less reliant on
teachers to spoonfeed information to them.
Everyone should ask themselves the question: what do I
want to learn about today? |
