Irish Education At Risk
The Challenge for Irish Education.
by SoftwareGuru Friday 14th November 2008 14:50 GMT
To cut or not to cut, that is the question currently facing those responsible for education in Ireland.
For two weeks there has been little or no movement as possible cutbacks have been debated and lines have been drawn in the sand.
Fine Gael wants teachers and other public servants earning more than €50,000 to accept a pay freeze but this has been rejected by the teacher unions.
Cowen's Government are now being accused by the Irish Vocational Education Association of taking a "scatter-gun approach" in relation to school cutbacks. The emphasis appears to be on saving money without any real strategy behind it.
Nevertheless, politicians appear determined to shift any blame for cutbacks - if they occur - onto the teachers themselves.
Their argument is that implementing next year's 3.5pc pay rise across the education sector will cost €240m over 12 months, more than twice the sum needed to reverse the Budget cuts.

When the going gets tough...
Further education courses in Ireland will feel the effects of cutbacks too.
It has been reported that the 1,000+ further education courses which currently operate on a pupil-teacher ratio of 16:1 will change to 17:1 next year.
This represents the interests of 30,000 students taking post-Leaving Cert courses which are designed to equip them for the workplace or higher education.
Meanwhile, the Taoiseach has given assurances that the Government does not underestimate the need for leadership declaring that,
"We are under no illusion as to the magnitude to the task, and our job is to communicate to the public precisely the gravity of the situation. The decisions we are making now will determine whether we throw away the economic progress we have achieved or whether we give ourselves and our children a prosperous future. That is how stark this situation is and that is why we have been taking the difficult decisions that we have."
