For anyone who wishes to edit digital photos, Software4Students offers Expression Design 2. This is a superb image editor and creator which effectively does the jobs of both Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator.

If you're feeling more adventurous, Microsoft have now launched a free online version of their Photosynth software which has previously been showcased in TV programs such as CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

Using digital photos, Photosynth creates detailed 3D environments. Check out the YouTube video for a demonstration.

Imagine being able to share the places and things you love using the cinematic quality of a movie, the control of a video game, and the mind-blowing detail of the real world.

Photosynth explained

Photosynth advice available
from their official site.

Create something unique

Photosynth is a potent mixture of two independent breakthroughs: the ability to reconstruct the scene or object from a bunch of flat photographs, and the technology to bring that experience to virtually anyone over the Internet.

Using techniques from the field of computer vision, Photosynth examines images for similarities to each other and uses that information to estimate the shape of the subject and the vantage point each photo was taken from.

With this information, it recreates the space and uses it as a canvas to display and navigate through the photos.

Photosynth was inspired by the breakthrough research on Photo Tourism from the University of Washington in the U.S. and Microsoft Research.

This work pioneered the use of photogrammetry to power a cinematic and immersive experience.

What's The Catch?

For Star Trek fans, it's not quite the holodeck experience yet but it is a fantastic leap forward in recreating familiar environments in 3D.

At Christmas time it's common for people to take a lot of photos with a digital camera so perhaps this could be a fun way to show your special day to friends and other family members.

For tips and advice, alongside the YouTube video we also recommend the Photosynth blog which explains in more detail how to get the most out of your photos.

The possibilities are endless.
