Education protests continue as online shopping bucks trend.

Schools in turmoil, Irish online shopping continues.

With Christmas approaching, there are two main stories of concern for visitors to the Software4Students website.

Firstly, despite all of the protests by parents, pupils and teachers, the Minister for Education is still telling everyone to "Get Real" about the necessity for education cuts.

His statement this week comes after it was announced that the government had got its sums wrong again (Lenihan - go stand in the corner!) and the country's income will be even less next year than had been previously thought.

From RTE news reporters to national newspapers, they all agree that the core issue is class size. Unfortunately, we are now being told that the country cannot afford to educate pupils to the same standards as we have done for the last decade.

Maybe a few less €80k flights on the government jet by senior ministers like Mary Harney would help?

Less money for schools.

Tensions will be running high among principals across the country as they struggle to come to terms with budgeting for the next academic season.

Already, one Northside Dublin school is taking issue with parents over non-payment of a €500 fee per pupil.

Despite continued protests around the country, instances like these are likely to continue under current conditions.

Next year, pressure on parents is likely to increase due to increased job losses in many industries combined with schools looking for them to make up the shortfall in school budgets.

Perhaps it will take until then for the government to consider alternatives to education cuts.

Christmas Bargain Hunting.

In previous blog posts, Software4Students has highlighted the costs involved for Irish students who wish to get the most for their money.

Online shopping in Ireland continues to rally in the face of economic downturn for many reasons. Price and choice being two of the most important.

In this type of climate, companies like Microsoft are uniquely positioned to be able to help whether it's offering free design software for 3rd level students through the DreamSpark programme, or agreeing to sell Office software at up to 90% discounts through Software4Students.

To borrow a phrase, every little helps!
