Docs.com- Will Gen-Y Use Microsoft Office Web App on Facebook?

Docs.com - the new Facebook app.

by SoftwareGuru

If OfficeLive.com comes across as the type of online utility that your parents would use, it's time to meet the young upstart Docs.com

Created by Microsoft as part of the Office 2010 release, the new website allows you to create and share documents within your Facebook environment.

The fact that many businesses don't equate Facebook activity with productivity illustrates that this is clearly a Generation-Y strategy designed to win over the younger market.

When added alongside the Xbox 360 and forthcoming 'Kin' Windows Mobile phone, it's clear that Microsoft have realised that its future does not rest solely on servicing the needs of today's business users.

After all, the next generation of employee right now is a student.

Apple has made millions selling vastly overpriced hard drives to people in shiny iPad clothing using marketing that gives it an edgy, young, vibrant image.

It may have taken Microsoft a while to catch up but they're finally taking on Google and Apple when it comes to winning over the hearts and minds of Gen-Y.

How Docs.com works

If you're already signed into your Facebook account, you are logged in automatically when you visit Docs.com.

From there you can view shared documents.

Lifehacker.com clarifies the current status,

"The service is currently in a fairly early beta stage, meaning you'll have to sign up for their waiting list before you can upload or create your own documents.

Because of that, there's not much to the service now, but it's clearly a push toward competing with Google Docs.
"

The blog post on Docs.com states that the beta project only started 4 months ago so there's obviously a lot of work being done as we speak to the online application.

With so many other social networking platforms competing for our attention, this is exactly the type of heavyweight killer app that will help Facebook maintain its #1 status.

Providing Facebook can reassure users about the privacy of their documents and not make mistakes similar to Google Buzz, the future looks bright indeed.
Office 2010

Over in our Software4Students blog I've written this week about the impact of illegal downloading and piracy on Gen-Y attitudes over the last 10 years.

Free online web apps can help companies like Microsoft curb piracy by putting the user experience at the forefront of its design.

There's a lot of opinion written online as regards products like Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft Word 2010 and often they're written by critics who clearly have not used either program in-depth for any sustained period of time.

As with any program, if you invest a little effort to learn about the more advanced features you will soon wonder how you ever got by without them.

Creating the best possible work in the least amount of time is usually achieved with software that isn't the most basic version around.

That's why the fully fledged Microsoft Office 2010 Pro package is worth every discounted penny.
