Bad News For High Street Shops As PC Game Download Sales Surge by SoftwareGuru If you buy a CD, DVD, BluRay, or PC game from the high street in the next six months you may be part of a new minority. It has been widely reported this week that PC game downloads in America measured a record 11.2 million, compared with 8.2. million physical units purchased in stores during Jan-June 2010. Irish trends are likely to follow a similar pattern. I wonder what the piracy figures for the same products would be? This means retail stores are selling less physical goods and in some cases earn less profit on the same digital product from their online stores. Whatever way you look at, digital goods are generally cheaper and traditional high street business models are feeling the pressure. This change in behaviour has already decimated the recorded music industry with many record shops closing down and UK ISPs being made to pay 25% of the cost of policing file-sharers. In Ireland there has already been much controversy surrounding the 3 strikes rule and file sharing. Value for money is what drives us to buy goods and services. Retailers must meet this challenge or customers will look elsewhere.
